Its core section, Shantang Street, stretches about 3.6 kilometers from Changmen in the east to Tiger Hill in the west, forming Suzhou’s classic water-town pattern of “rivers running alongside streets, with water and land routes parallel.”

A National 4A Scenic Area, one of Suzhou’s Four Great Classical Gardens, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 1997). First built in 1342 during the Yuan Dynasty, it covers about 1.1 hectares and is famous for having the largest surviving ancient lake-rock rockery complex in China, known as the “Kingdom of Rockeries”. It is a representative Yuan-Dynasty garden and a model of Zen landscape design, and was a must-visit for Emperor Qianlong during his six southern tours.
