Immerse yourself in history at Regional Museum (Queen D. Leonor)

Holiday Inn Beja LOCAL AREA

A historic hilltop city in Portugal’s Alentejo region, Beja is celebrated for its 13th-century Beja Castle, whitewashed buildings, narrow cobbled streets, Praia Fluvial dos 5 Reis, and cultural sites such as the Roman Arch and the Church of Santiago.

THINGS TO DO

Castel of Beja

Jardim da Rua de Dom Dinis, Rua de Antero de Quental e R. Dom Dinis, 3 Beja, 7800-000

Beja Castle has been classified as a National Monument since 1910 and is the city's most emblematic monument.

Alqueva

Explore Europe’s largest artificial lake, stretching across the Alentejo region, offering breathtaking landscapes and endless outdoor activities. Created by the Alqueva Dam on the Guadiana River, it’s a haven for boating, kayaking, fishing, and stargazing under some of the clearest skies in the world. Surrounded by charming villages, vineyards, and rolling hills, Alqueva is a peaceful retreat where nature, adventure, and tranquillity come together in perfect harmony.

São Domingos

Rua de Santa Isabel, 30-31 Mértola, Beja, 7750-146

São Domingos, in the Alentejo region, charms visitors with its mining heritage and peaceful landscapes. Once a thriving centre for copper and pyrite extraction, it preserves the old mine, the Malacate, and the Miner’s House. With gentle trails and the Tapada Grande river beach, it blends history, culture, and nature in a unique, tranquil setting.

Roman Arch

Rua de D. Dinis, Beja, 7800-500

Now part of the medieval castle, this arch dates back to the 3rd-4th centuries AD, when it formed part of the Roman walls and served as a city gate. It is believed to have been demolished in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1938 using preserved remains. Known as the “Portas de Évora”, it has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Church of Santiago

Largo do Lidador, Beja, 7800-265

Step back in time at the Church of Santa Amaro, just near the castle, dating back to the 6th century and one of Portugal’s oldest preserved buildings. Inside, explore the West Gothic Museum (Museu Núcleo Visigótico), where fascinating artifacts bring the region’s rich history to life. A must-see for history lovers and culture enthusiasts alike.
