Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park commemorates the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Chancellorsville Campaign encompassing the battles of Chancellorsville, Second Fredericksburg, and Salem Church, the Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.

This bronze statue of General Mercer was erected in 1906 by the US government. The sculptor was Edward Valentine of Richmond, who did the famous reclining statue of Robert E. Lee at Washington and Lee University. Mercer, a general in the Revolutionary War, was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. General George S. Patton of World War II fame was a great, great grandson of Hugh Mercer

The museum was first opened in 1927 by Monroe descendants as a place to house their own personal collections, which had been handed down through generations of the family.
